Barbara Holmes
June 17, 1924 - August 15, 2016

Barbara Holmes, 92, of Des Moines, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016 at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines surrounded by her loving family. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. A luncheon will follow the committal service at the Park Avenue Christian Church in Des Moines from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.



Barbara was born in Winterset, Iowa to Charles and Georgia (Kessler) Spurgin. She attended Wilson High School in Cherokee, Iowa and graduated in 1942. Following high school she married the love of her life Donald Holmes and to this union three sons were born. In 1954 Barbara lost Donald to cancer and she always worked at least two jobs to support her boys and the family. She had a great love for her family and people in general and enjoys striking up conversations. Barbara also enjoyed dancing, Donald and she were the Iowa Jitterbug Champions 2 years in a row.



Those left to cherish her loving memories are her son Gerald (Shirley) Holmes, grandson Christopher (Donna) Holmes and great-grandchildren Erica and Paige, grandson Andrew (Lelia) Holmes and great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Cooper, and Hadley, grandson Nicholas (Kelli) Holmes, son Larry (Gretchen) Holmes, granddaughter Abbie (Doug) Keller and great-grandchildren Allison and Nicholas, granddaughter Maggie (Jordan) Reiss and great-grandchildren Ilan and Logan, son Charles Chuck (Becky) Holmes, grandson Brandon (Christy) Holmes and great-grandchildren Ethan and Jacen, grandson Davin (Tiffany) Holmes and great-grandchildren Darrah and Emery, granddaughter Whitney (Bobby) Mazzie and great-grandchildren Vinny and Kendall.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters.



Celebrate Life Iowa has been entrusted with the care of Barbara and her family.
