WASHINGTON-Alta Elizabeth "Toots" Maxted, age 89, of Washington, died Friday, September 28, 2018, quietly in her sleep.
Alta was born May 14, 1929, in Kimball, Nebraska to Truman Orison (T.O.) and Effie Mae (Hill) Sandridge and graduated from Kimball High School in 1947. On August 20, 1947, Alta married Merle Maxted in Kimball, Nebraska. Alta and Merle were life-long farmers, raising wheat, corn and sunflowers. They worked farms near Kimball, Nebraska, in South Dakota and in western Iowa until retiring to Sigourney in 1993. Alta was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church and Aspasia Chapter O.E.S. in Sigourney.
Survivors include three sons: James (Traci) of Cedar Rapids, Michael (Mary) of Washington and Jack of Story City; four grandchildren: Jeff Maxted (Shelley), Jen Maxted, Angie Maxted (Mark Nipper) and Melody Maxted (Tracy Darbyshire); four great grandchildren: Jaydon Darbyshire, Libby and Ryan Maxted and Laurel Nipper; brother-in-law: Donald Maxted (Joyce) of Kimball, Nebraska and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Merle in 2007; two brothers and two sisters.
Memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church, with Rev. Shannon Pascual officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.
A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Alta and her family. Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
