Earl A. "Butch" Shady
July 30, 1948 - October 20, 2017

Earl A. "Butch" Shady, 69, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Friday morning, October 20, 2017, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

A celebration of Earl's life will be held at 2 P.M., Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Monmouth, Iowa Cemetery with military honors.

Earl Arthur Shady was born on July 30, 1948 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to J. Neville and Helen A. (Johnson) Shady. He attended Monmouth schools and graduated from Midland High School. He then farmed for a year prior to being drafted. He served in the U.S. Army receiving an honorable discharge. He married Patty Westphal. They later divorced and he married Debi Todhunter. Three sons were born to this union. They later divorced. He then married Kathy Gray in 1982 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

"Butch" was a family oriented man who always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. He would help anyone who needed help. He loved horses and enjoyed raising them, often giving them away. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and liked to build things. He was known to tear down old barns and then rebuild them. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Those left to honor Earl's memory include his wife, Kathy Shady of Maquoketa, IA; children, Lohnne Shady of Charleston, SC, Lance (Misty) Shady of Chillicothe, MO, Luke (Chrissie) Shady of Ely, NV, Joshua (Tara) Shady of Boone, IA, and Jennifer Vorbeck Moore of Iowa City, IA; 14 grandchildren; brothers, Harry (Audra) Shady of Zwingle, IA, and Theodore "Ted" Shady of Maquoketa, IA; a sister, Elaine Watters of New Orleans, LA; a sister-in-law, Georgia Shady of Maquoketa, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers James and Jesse Shady, and sisters-in-law, Genevieve Shady and Joan Shady.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, an Earl A. "Butch" Shady memorial fund has been established.
