Bert Seely

Bert Frank Seely was born January 9, 1924 at Whittemore, Iowa, to Harry and Lela (Cairy) Seely. He attended country school and graduated from Whittemore Public School. Bert then moved to California where he attended trade school then worked at Lockheed Air Force Base. Bert was united in marriage to Helen Louise Meyer on November 18, 1942, in Glendale, California. Bert enlisted in the United States Air Force and was discharged in December, 1945. Following his discharge, the couple moved back to Whittemore where they farmed. Later Bert worked at the Whittemore Creamery and the Whittemore Elevator, retiring in 1985. They moved into Whittemore in 1989. Bert enjoyed playing cards and reading but his real enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church as well as Seely-Walsh Post #425, American Legion in Whittemore.

Helen Louise Seely was born October 14, 1923, at Whittemore, Iowa to George and Anna (Nissen) Meyer. Helen attended Lutheran School and graduated from Whittemore Public School. She moved to California following graduation where she worked at an aviation plant. Following Bert's discharge from the Air Force, the couple moved back to Whittemore. Helen was employed at Zumach Store and later as a bookkeeper at the Whittemore Elevator. She enjoyed baking, cross-stitch, quilting, canning and playing cards. Helen was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church as well as the Joy Circle.

Bert and Helen died on Thursday evening, June 22, 2006, following a traffic accident at the corner of Highway 15 and 18, north of Whittemore. They were both 82 years old.

Survivors include their children; Keith Seely and wife Kendra of Whittemore; Karen Smith and husband Bruce of Olalla, Washington and Kenneth (Pinky) Seely and wife Shirley of Sioux City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kirk and LiAnn, Kris and Dave, Brian, Ben and B.J., four great grandchildren, Seth, Kelci, Aspen and Maddie as well as granddaughter Natalie's husband Eric Chambers. Helen is also survived by sister-in-law Alice Meyer of Algona and brother-in-law Bill Ostwald of Whittemore. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Verda Ostwald, Lydia Greinert, Doris Bruhn and Alma Meyer, brother Lawrence Meyer and granddaughter Natalie Chambers. Bert was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Natalie Chambers.
