Ruby V. Heifner Hopkes, 77 of rural Titonka, died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at her residence.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1:30 PM at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka with Reverend Dennis Redeker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Monday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka, and will continue Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ruby Virginia Hopkes was born January 5, 1929 near Hobarton, daughter of Vincent and Ivy (Carlson) Heifner. She grew up in the communities of Algona, Burt, Buffalo Center, and Titonka. Ruby attended the Titonka School thru the 3rd grade, then country school Grant #5, and graduating from Buffalo Center High School in 1946.
Ruby taught school near Woden at Grant #8 from 1946 to 1947. In the summer, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then continued teaching at German #5 near Titonka until spring 1949. She was united in marriage to Alvin Hopkes on September 15, 1949 at the home of her parents south of Buffalo Center. They farmed together one mile south of Ramsey Reformed Church their entire married life.
Her faith, family and friends were most important to her. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, fishing, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. Because of her strong faith, she was an active member of Ramsey Reformed Church. In earlier years, she taught Sunday school, Bible School, and Catechism and was a long time member of the church adult choir. She also served in many capacities in the Ramsey Church Women and the Ruth Circle.
Ruby V. Hopkes died from cancer on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at her home near Titonka at the age of 77.
She is survived by her husband Alvin of Titonka; two daughters, Beverly Darr and her husband Joe of Terril, Linda Uken and her husband Gary of Titonka; a son-in-law, Jim Thomsen of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Laura Schulte and her husband Ben of Amana, Brian Thomsen of Cedar Rapids, Emily McCullough and her husband Reed of Fort Dodge, Ben Darr and his wife Christine of Iowa City, Holly Darr of Orange City, Andrea Smit and her husband Josh of Mankato, MN and Allison Uken of Cedar Falls; and three great-grandchildren, Austin, Renee, and Claire Schulte, all of Amana. She is also survived by four brothers, Jerald Heifner and his wife Myrtle of Fairmont, Carrol Heifner and his wife Fonda of Klemme, Virgil Heifner and his wife Louise of Buffalo Center, and Cecil Heifner and his wife Gertrude of Story City; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Heifner of Lone Rock; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marilyn Thomsen on January 26, 2005; a stillborn grandson, Clinton Darr; a brother, Robert Heifner; and a sister-in-law, Ardis Heifner.
