Bernice E. Hatten

Bernice Elsie Hatten was born June 10, 1919 in Seneca, Iowa, daughter of John and Anna (Krogh) Kramer. She grew up in Kossuth County area. Her family moved into Fenton in 1925 and she graduated from Fenton High School in 1936.

Bernice married James Hatten on June 22, 1942 at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. Bernice and Jim farmed north of town moving into Bancroft in 1964. She worked at the Heritage Nursing Home for five years and then at Welp's Chicken Hatchery for 15 years. Bernice enjoyed reading, embroidering, playing cards, and visiting with friends. She loved being with her family, dancing, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Altar Society, and St. John's Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband Jim of Bancroft; five children, DeWayne Hatten and his wife Jan of Mesa, AZ, Charles Hatten and his wife Sherrie of Cedar Park, TX, LaDonna Anderson of Fairmont, MN, Robert Hatten and his wife Sheila of Hendersonville, TN, and Darlene Odean and her husband Barry of Parker, CO; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Lillian Johnson of Ledyard; three brothers, Harold Kramer of Ringsted, Harland Kramer and his wife Edna of Ringsted, and Lloyd Kramer and his wife Lee of Alamonte Springs, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bea Gillespie; and a brother, Leo Kramer.
