Alvina A. Ernst

Alvina Ann Ernst was born February 3, 1915, in Bode, Iowa, the daughter of William and Christina Etringer Thilges. She grew up on the family farm and attended St. Joseph Catholic School in St. Joseph. After her schooling she worked at home until she was married.

On November 4, 1941, Alvina was united in marriage to Carl Ernst in St. Joseph, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived on a farm near St. Joe. When Carl returned from serving his country the couple settled on a farm near Whittemore, Iowa. In 1971, they retired from farming and moved into town. Alvina also cooked at several restaurants in Algona. Alvina enjoyed playing cards, doing needlepoint and gardening. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Rosary Society and the Whittemore Legion Auxiliary.

Alvina died Monday, December 26, 2005, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa, at the age of 90.

She is survived by her children, Jeannie and husband Duane Grandgenett of St. Louis, Missouri; Carol and husband Larry Scobba of Algona, Iowa; Donna and husband Paul Kollasch of Algona, Iowa; Jim and wife Karen Ernst of Algona, Iowa; Sandy and husband Michael Elbert of Whittemore; Betty and husband George Merrill of Emmetsburg, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, William Thilges of Bode, Iowa; sister, Martha Mosser of Durant, Oklahoma, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alvina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl, Feb. 1, 1978; son, Dennis; brothers and sisters, Laurena, Malinda, Hilda, Albert, Raphael, Charles, Martin and Ivo Lu.
