Duane Charles Metzger was born on May 21, 1927, at Algona, Iowa, to Albert Louis and Antony Freida Leeck Metzger. He received his education in the Plum Creek Township country school. After his schooling, Duane helped his father on the family farm. Duane served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He served in Germany. After his return from the service, Duane continued farming. He was married to Viola Mae Potthoff on January 22, 1952, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Lotts Creek, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Burt area for 12 years and then farmed in the Lotts Creek area until their retirement in 1992. Duane and Viola continued living on the farm and Duane assisted his son with the farming operation.
Duane was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Lotts Creek. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He also enjoyed dancing and motor cycles.
Duane died on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was 77.
Duane is survived by his wife, Viola, Lone Rock, Iowa and his children, Conley Metzger and wife, Diane, Lone Rock, Iowa and Gloria O'Leary and husband, Dan, Emmetsburg, Iowa. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren and 2 sisters, Imogene Boeckholt, Woden, Iowa and Joan Nemitz, Fenton, Iowa. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Darwin in 1981 and 1 step great granddaughter.
