Leo Walter Richter was born on December 2, 1912, at Titonka, Iowa to Gustav and Edna Lamoreaux Richter. He graduated from the Titonka High School. After his schooling, Leo worked for the Schutjer family in their farming operation and their Standard Oil business. He started working for the John Deere Implement Co. in Titonka in 1936. Leo was married to Gertrude Attig on January 18, 1940, at the Methodist Parsonage in Britt, Iowa. The couple lived in Titonka, in the same house for 64 years. Leo continued working for John Deere. He retired in 1984, serving the John Deere Implement for 48 ½ years.
Leo was an active member of the Titonka United Methodist Church. He enjoyed viewing sports, gardening, driving through the countryside and sharing gum with everyone. Leo was an avid reader and kept up with the current events. He was very faithful in visiting with the shut-ins in the community. For the past 19 ½ years, he never missed having coffee at the Implement Store every Monday morning.
Leo became a resident of the Titonka Care Center in November of 2003. He died at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa on Friday, December 19, 2003, at the age of 91.
Leo is survived by his wife, Gertrude, Titonka, Iowa, and his daughter, Beverly Brauhn and her husband, James, Linn Grove, Iowa. Also surviving are 2 grandsons, Marc Leon Richter, Ocheyedan, Iowa, Stephen Leo Richter, Sioux Rapids, Iowa and his sister, Emma Smith, Algona, Iowa. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Alice Beresford, 1 brother, Alfred Richter and 3 step-brothers, Lawrence, Harley and Andrew Hansen.
