In loving memory of

Marshall O. "Doc" Pitcher
December 25, 1925 - February 4, 2015

Marshall O. "Doc" Pitcher, 89, of Maquoketa, died suddenly on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

A celebration of Marshall's life will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, February 7, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M. on Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Marshall was born Christmas Day, 1925, the youngest child of Austin and Lucille Pitcher of Collins, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Collins High School 1943.

Marshall enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines at the close of WWII for two years (1944-1946).

Upon his return home, he attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1954 receiving his DVM - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. While at ISU, he was a member of Adelante Fraternity.

He married Else Nielsen on July 23, 1955 and after practicing in Freeport, IL, moved to Maquoketa, Iowa in 1956 and established his veterinary practice. He worked as a large and small animal vet for 30 years and then in 1987, began work as a veterinary inspector for the USDA, retiring in 2000.

During his 59 years in the community, he served on several boards including the Maquoketa School Board, the Jackson County Board of Health and the Jackson County Demonstration Farm. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and loved music and singing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Milo, Bobby and Howard (Bun), a sister Velma and a niece MaryAnn.

He is survived by his wife Else, four children - Paul of Reading, PA, Anne ( Michael) Hawks of Maquoketa, Alan (Alicia) of Wichita, KS, and Miriam (Tom) Mackey of Cedar Rapids and eight grandchildren - Marshall & Perry Hawks, Charlie Pitcher, Austin, Amelia, and Arin Pitcher, and Lydia and Helen Mackey.

He loved his coffee buddies, travelling - whether to faraway places or the familiar gravel roads of Jackson County, the farmers and their stories, and anything for a laugh.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine or the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa.

Dr. Kyle Kramer wrote on Feb 9, 2015:

"To the family of MO and all that loved him, I have had a series of mentors, but possibly my greatest was Dr. Pitcher. His influence and advice were some of the most impacting in the shaping of my career and the professional path I chose. While my personal, near daily, contact (I worked for him) ended some 34 years ago, I still tell stories about our times together. I still laugh when telling friends stories of watching baseball and drinking beer together on a summer Saturday afternoon (just one example). MO´s ability to improvise in any situation impresses me to this day. I am saddened to hear the news of the passing of this great man. At the same time, I realize I was blessed to have had the privilege of knowing him and being "under his wing". I also know there are others like me that MO mentored. Thank you MO for giving me your time, advice, and helping me become who I am today. Dr. Kyle Kramer (San Diego CA, and Antigua, Guatemala) "

Dr. Kent Henderson wrote on Feb 7, 2015:

"To Elsa, Paul, Anne, Alan, and Miriam My deepest condolences go out to you all. As you may recall through their professional lives, community service, and unshakable loyalty to the Cyclones, our families have been closely connected over the decades, so we are very sad to hear of Doc's passing. From my early youth, Doc served as a personal role model for me as I pursued a similar life path from farm youth to Iowa State Vet college to food animal veterinarian clinician. Doc allowed me to extern with him and Don Yanda during my summer college breaks and I was so pleased to offer the same role to Paul as he progressed through vet school. While I held his professional skills in the highest regard, he also imparted on me a sense of balance in life and responsibility to others. It was a real blessing to have him in our lives."

"Elsa and Family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you with the sudden passing of our friend and mentor. I shall miss his drop-in visits and calls where we shared tears and a few laughs. His family was his pride and joy. The tears that flowed came easily as he related the latest family news. How blessed he was as a parent and husband. Marshall can't be forgotten for the many years he was our veterinarian. You could count on him no matter what the weather was or time of day. In that respect, he was one of a kind and that meant a lot to us. There are many good people we meet along the path of life. Now our friend is on a new journey, but I know he would want us to reflect on how he made a difference for each of us."

"May I send my deep condolences to your family. I have always regarded Dr. Pitcher with highest respect. He did so much for our community for so long, and truly served the people in Maquoketa and the area in so many ways. But I will most always remember his strong clear voice, that sparkle in his eye, and ready laugh and sharp wit. Always curious about what was happening and eager to have a lively discussion about all manner of things. From the time I was young and watched him care for our various pets with a practical, yet caring compassion; to the friendship extended by him and Else over the years, and by Paul, Anne, Alan and Miriam. Your parents love was always evident in their children. He is someone I will always think of fondly, respectfully and a with a smile. May you find comfort in the love and support of all his friends in the community, but also, if they were able to express themselves, from the many many animals he cared for and tended so compassionately. God bless, John Nelles, and family, Toronto, Canada"

He came to our farm several times and one time in particular he came to geld a horse for me. He encouraged me to watch and told me when he was done that he heard from my Dad that the horse was giving me issues. He said go cut a plum switch and climb on that horse and teach him what was what. I did and never looked back. He was gentle and strong both with a great love for his patients. He will be missed. Prayers for all of his family."
