Roman Johnson
November 27, 1918 - October 20, 2009

Roman Richard Johnson was born on November 27, 1918, in Delafield Township of Jackson County. He was the youngest of eight children born to Arthur E. and Belle (Sogge) Johnson. At an early age he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Windom Public School until he enlisted in the Army at the age of 18.

Roman was in World War II and received the following awards: Air Medal with a 9 Oak Leaf Cluster, American Mission, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct award, and Certificate of Valor for 50 missions.

On August 31, 1957, Roman was united in marriage to Marie Nielsen at the American Lutheran Church in Windom, Minnesota. After marriage, Roman and Marie lived in Windom where Roman was a brick layer. Marie passed away on February 25, 1999. Roman continued living in Windom after Marie's death and moved in February of 2009 to the Sogge Memorial Good Samaritan Society in Windom where he lived until passing away on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009 at the age of 90.

Roman was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom, American Legion, Golden K Kiwanis Club for many years and delivered Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by friend and caregiver, Stacy Martin of Windom; nieces and nephews, Ralph Elness of Windom, Pat (Jim) Rossow of North Mankato, Cal (Linda) Johnson of Minnetonka, and Sally (Bill) Ericksen of Farmington; several great nieces and nephews; and special friend, Bill Baumann.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie, in 1999; three brothers, Eldon, Gerhardt and Orville Johnson; four sisters, Benora Rummons, Alma Johnson, Lillian Carbine, and Idelle Hanson; and one niece, Barbara Elness.

"Roman was my uncle, as Marie was my dad's sister. We enjoyed visiting him when we passed through Windom on our way home to Colorado Springs. Knowing that my wife is Norwegian, he noted that he was, too, and that he was taking a pill for it!! His quick wit was enjoyed by many and he will be missed."
