Indianapolis where she worked at several IPS schools as a Kindergarten Teacher and a Teacher on special assignment until her retirement in June of 1992. Betty married James Irvin Pipes in January of 1956. They enjoyed 44 years of marriage before James's untimely death in December of 2000. James and Betty were blessed with one son, Brian Irvin Pipes or "Bip" as he was so fondly called. Brian remained the center of their joy and the love of their lives. Betty was always a very active, outgoing person who enjoyed people and memberships in several organizations. Before her illness she was physically active in her church activities. She was a member of Alpha Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Betty was one of the original founders of the Indianapolis Chapter of Drifters Inc. She also held lifetime memberships in the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA), the National Education Association (NEA), and the NAACP. Before her illness she also enjoyed her bi-weekly Bridgette Bridge Club. Betty Jean Cowherd Pipes is survived by her son Brian I. Pipes, her niece, Donna Ruth Hubbard, her beloved Pipes family members and her many friends.
