was born May 30, 1923, in Worth County, Iowa the daughter of Thomas and Mabel (Sime) Johnson.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. She attended grade school in Hartland Township and then attended and graduated Northwood High School in 1940. She continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College where she received training to become a teacher, her chosen profession.
Blanche began teaching in the rural schools in Worth County, then taught at Northwood Elementary and later taught for 23 years in the Mason City School System; retiring in 1986 having taught for 40 years. Following retirement she spent a number of years volunteering in Northwood Kensett Schools.
On July 24, 1943, she was united in marriage to Arnold Hogen who at the time was serving in the Navy during WWII. She left the teaching profession for a year and worked for the British Government in the Washington D.C. where Arnold was stationed. Upon his transfer to active duty she returned to teach. Following the war and Arnold's return they returned to Worth County to farm. To this union three children were born, Lonnie who died in infancy Renita and John. They were member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church and later Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett. Blanche taught Sunday School and was active in the Women's organizations at their churches.
Blanche took great pride in her children and grandchildren. Being in early education to anxiously observe the progress as they started school. She shared with them easy reading books and games; she had made for former students. Once a teacher always a teacher - that was our Mom and Grandma!
Blanche is survived by her children, Renita (Dean) Wieland, Independence, IA, and John (Karen) Hogen, Mason City, IA. Her grandchildren include SSGT. Nathan (Jamie) Dolan and their children, Reilly and Ryan; Brady Dolan and his children Taylor, Remington, and Regan; Ian Hogen; and step-grandson Caleb (Amaya) Hill and their children Isla, Zane, and Drew; step-grandson Jeremy (Sarah) Wieland and sons Matthew, Tyler, Carver, and Sawyer; step-grandson Chad Wieland; and step-granddaughter Kristin Wieland; along with several nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.
Those who preceded her in death was her husband Arnold on December 9, 2007, a son Lonnie Gene, March of 1947, a granddaughter Katherine Hogen infancy, her parents, sister Mardell Wallace and husband Ira, brother-in-law Dennis Nelson, niece Durene Nelson.
