She returned to the work force serving in the Des Moines Public Schools, YWCA and then Job Service of Iowa in Council Bluffs. After her husband's retirement both of them dedicated their time to volunteer work at IWCC. Together they amassed over 34,000 hours of service, with 23,000 of those hours being credited to Gertrude. Gertrude received numerous awards for this service including the Heritage Award in Education (2001) and Iowa State Volunteer Hall of Fame Award for Pottawattamie County in 1992. She and Jim jointly received Iowa Western Community College Black Tie Harvest Awards in 2002 and 2004, and awards from Iowa Western for their contributions to the Athletic Department. Gertrude was a proud homemaker and life-long learner. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, collecting recipes and cook books, history, traveling, and teaching classes at IWCC. She read extensively, particularly biographies. Gertrude was a long-time member of Broadway United Methodist Church, American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Chapter MF of P.E.O. She loved her country and was very patriotic. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; brother, Milford; and sister, Barbara. She is survived by her son, John, his wife Donna, and Jim's sister, Barbara Iverson and family. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and Asera Care Hospice for their love and attention during my parents final days. It allowed them to fulfill their final dream: To stay in their home until passing.
