e over the Atlas Mountains through Touareg villages. They arrived back in France just in time for the Cannes film festival and returned to the US on the last sailing of the "France," which included gourmet eight-course meals. The pair returned to Seattle, but in 1980 Bart wanted to travel again, so they spent the winter driving through Mexico visiting all the Mayan pyramids down to Cancun. They returned to Europe and in 1981 Bart fell in love with Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Bart was accepted by a local group of Germans (becoming part of their Stammtisch) and he became very fluent in German. They spent three winter seasons skiing: 84-85 Sud Tirol, Italy; 85-86 Trois Vallées, France; and 86-87 in Saint Anton, Austria. The summer of 1987 they ended up in Geneva, Switzerland where Bart worked for the United Nations - WHO and ILO. Of course Bart also became fluent in French. They became part of the expat community and hosted Thanksgiving dinners and many barbecues and parties at their house after softball games. In 1989 they traveled to Egypt. They returned to the US in the fall of 1990. In 2008 they had a final adventure returning to Turkey to visit their favorite places. Every day Bart thanked Mary for the wonderful experiences and life they had together. He felt he had lived a very exceptional life. He was an avid reader with over 700 books of history and non-fiction in his library, in three languages and he volunteered at the Bothell Library. He will be remembered for his quick wit and his beloved cats. Bart is survived by his wife Mary; in-laws Theo & Nancy Lashley, James Lashley, Sandy Lashley, Lieneke & Neal Curtin; niece Jacqueline and nephews Larry, Ian, Kai, Noel; uncle Ed & Marge, aunt Jean; cousins David, Eric, Cheryl, Paul, Lavon, Una; also his new- found family in Canada: siblings Bev, Janet, Connie, Carol, Ross; in addition to many friends around the world. There will be a Celebration of Life in the new year.
